When the pieces are dry they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper. Fired and patina copper is adhered to the paper and a joint compound mixture is spread on the bottom 2 3 of the piece below the metal to form the cracked surface. After the surface dries, it is carefully sanded and the top 1 4 of the Joint compound is stained with a thin wash of black paint. Encaustic is
